They are tiny animals that live near or inside human dwellings where contact with people is high. Every few days, they lay 100-150 eggs which develop into adults in about a week. They are mosquitoes. The adult females feed on people’s blood, several times during the day.

Microcephaly is a neonatal malformation defined as a head size much smaller compared with other babies of the same age and sex. If this combines with poor brain growth, babies with microcephaly can develop developmental disabilities. The severity of microcephaly ranges from mild to severe.

In Guillain-Barré syndrome, the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The fourth meeting of the Emergency Committee (EC) on Zika and microcephaly convened by the Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) regarding microcephaly, other neurological disorders and Zika virus was on 1 September 2016. The Committee agreed that Zika virus infection and its associated congenital and other neurological disorders continues to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
